Isandlwana
A major Zulu victory during the Anglo-Zulu War.
The Battle of Isandlwana was fought on 22 January 1879 near Nquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal. A Zulu force estimated between 20,000 and 25,000 warriors defeated a British force of approximately 1,800 soldiers and auxiliaries.
Historical significance
The battle remains one of the most significant victories of the Zulu Kingdom during the Anglo-Zulu War, and one of the greatest defeats suffered by the British Army against an indigenous force during the colonial era.
