22 January 1879
Inyezane (Nyezane)
A British victory, with Zulu forces inflicting casualties and demonstrating strong resistance.
The Battle of Inyezane was fought on the same day as Isandlwana. British forces under Colonel Charles Pearson encountered Zulu forces near the Inyezane River while advancing toward Eshowe.
Historical significance
The battle forms part of the wider opening phase of the Anglo-Zulu War and helps explain the geography of British advances, Zulu resistance, and the pressure around Eshowe.
